The facilities and capabilities of the U.S. Space Command in Colorado, which is to monitor air, missile, and space activity for NORAD, are described. The Space Surveillance Center (SSC) whose goal is to detect, track, identify, and categorize orbiting objects quickly after launch is examined. The Space Surveillance Network, a worldwide array of radar and optical sensors, provides data for the SSC. The functions of the components of the SSC, which include radar fans, phased-array radars, radar interferometers, steerable radar antennas, and optical sensors, are discussed. The monitoring of breakups and the hazards of space debris are considered.
