Active Galactic Nuclei: Vlb Interferometry, Radio Sources: Statistics

Scientific paper

A statistical study of the apparent angular sizes of VLBI cores in extragalactic radio sources is presented. The mean angular size of cores is approximately proportional to the inverse of the observing frequency, which is consistent with inhomogeneous jet or sphere models. The mean angular size at 5 GHz is approximately constant in redshifts 0.04 < z < 2.5. One of the possible explanations in the frame of an inhomogeneous jet model is that the magnetic field in the compact structure of extragalactic radio sources evolves with redshift.
