The detection of deuterated formaldehyde, HDCO, in interstellar clouds by observations of the J(K-1,K+1) = 2(02) to 1(01) transition of the molecule at 128.81291 GHz is reported. Formaldehyde emission spectra were obtained of the molecular clouds L134 N and Heiles' Cloud 2 (CLD 2) of the Taurus Molecular Cloud complex using a 7-m antenna. Comparisons of HDCO abundances estimated from the observed antenna temperatures and a radiative transfer model for a uniform isothermal cloud with observed para and ortho H2CO abundances indicate an extent of deuterium fractionation comparable to that found in other deuterated species, suggesting that formaldehyde is produced primarily by gas-phase ion-molecule reactions and not grain chemistry. Examination of the HDCO and H2CO spectra from the two clouds also implies that the centimeter and millimeter lines arise from different regions within the clouds, and thus a comparison of these transitions for the derivation of the physical conditions within the clouds will lead to incorrect results.
