Detection of the 2-0, 3-1, and 4-2 band heads of CO in emission above the 2.3 micron continuum of the Becklin-Neugebauer object (BN) is reported. The emission is localized within a 1.4 arcsec radius (700 AU) of BN. The energies of the upper levels producing the 4-2 band head are E/k approximately 19,000 K. It appears that the most plausible excitation mechanism is collisions of CO with hot (3000-5000 K) hydrogen rather than ultraviolet pumping. From analysis of the collisional excitation and from upper limits on the flux of fundamental band emission, it is concluded that the overtone bands arise from an ultrahigh density (n/H/ higher than 10 to the 10th power per cu cm), compact region (approximately 1AU) near BN.
