A technique of obtaining two-dimensional beams by combining observations made with one-dimensional fan beams is described which does not require the use of Fourier transforms. Relations are developed which allow relatively simple calculation of the synthesized beams generated by fan beams of finite resolution when a simple method of reconstruction is employed. Synthesized beams for a number of practical situations are illustrated, and results are presented for an application of the technique to observations of the giant radio galaxy 3C 129 at 73.8 MHz. It is shown that simple back-projection reconstruction can produce very good synthesized beams with a minimum of computer processing for particular types of fan beams, that fan beams produced by correlation interferometers give good synthesized fan beams, and that the technique can be applied easily to linear arrays.
