This paper describes a series of quality control experiments designed to determine whether spectral line profile variations observed in certain slowly rotating B stars can be ascribed to nonradial pulsations. A large number of artificial 'observing runs' was constructed in which one author computed sets of simulated line profiles containing random noise and the effects of nonradial pulsation. The second author then tried to determine pulsation periods from these data. Under a wide variety of realistic conditions the periods were determined successfully. It was also possible to determine a solution when two-mode oscillations were represented in the data. Using the profile variable Iota Her as a model, an attempt is made to explore the limiting conditions under which period determinations are possible.
