SINCE the discovery of the 3° K cosmic blackbody radiation1, the hypothesis of helium formation in a primordial fireball has received some support. Peebles2 and Wagoner, Fowler and Hoyle3 have deduced a value Y≅0.25 for the abundance of helium, by mass, synthesized in the hot big-bang. If this value for the abundance of helium were found in the oldest stars of our galaxy-that is, in the extreme population II stars of globular clusters-the big-bang cosmological model would receive further strong support.
