The nature of the surface of Venus is being revealed by a series of investigations using spacecraft observations and measurements from the Soviet and U.S. space probes and Earth-based radar telescope observations. This paper reviews a series of recent studies on the global properties of Venus, the characteristics of the Venera and Vega landing sites, and the geological and geophysical processes operating to form and modify the surface of Venus. Emphasis is placed on studies reported at the series of Brown University - Vernadsky Institute microsymposia.
