The scientific aims and design concept of the ESA astronomy satellite Hipparcos are discussed, and the development status of the satellite (and its input catalog and data-analysis systems) is indicated in a diagram. Hipparcos is scheduled for Ariane launch in spring/summer 1989 and transfer (in about 3 weeks) to a 36,000-km-high 0.7-4-deg-inclination 12-deg-longitude sun-synchronous orbit for a 2.5-yr mission, during which parallaxes, positions, and proper motions are to be measured for about 500,000 stars (100,000 in a high-accuracy Hipparcos catalog and 400,000 in a lower-accuracy Tycho catalog) and transmitted (at 23 kb/s) to the ESOC ground station at Darmstadt. The double telescope (with two 180-deg windows mounted at a fixed angle of 58 deg to each other) and the optical, electronic, and support hardware are to be installed on a CFRP structure, for the most part using simple screw-together modular busses to facilitate integration.
