Measurements of midinfrared extinction coefficients of five natural amorphous silicates and seven synthetic glasses are presented, and the sizes of the bands found at 10, 12, and 20 microns are found to correlate with the SiO2 content of the samples. It is shown that as the SiO2 content decreases, the peak height decreases and the FWHM increases. A strong correlation is found between the 10-micron peak wavelength and the peak width for these amorphous silicates. Comparison is made with the 10-micron bands of astronomical objects. A method for estimating the SiO2 content of astronomical grain materials is discussed, and a value of 48 + or - 8 wt pct SiO2 is found which corresponds to the peak wavelength of 9.7 microns and the peak width of 2.5-3.0 microns of typical celestial objects.
