A low-mass stellar companion to the nearby star Gl 866 has been imaged through the technique of infrared speckle interferometry at wavelengths of 1.6 and 2.2 μm. Measurements at epochs 1985.899 and 1986.701 yield angular separations of 0.40 (1.4 AU) and 0.32 arcsec, respectively, with a corresponding motion in position angle of -36°. The 2.2 μm absolute magnitudes of the two components yield mass estimates of 0.13 and 0.11 M_sun;. The physical similarity of these stars and the low declination of Gl 866 may explain why the companion was missed by long-term astrometric observations. The measured Fourier amplitudes and phases of the brightness distribution are used to obtain an image with angular resolution near the diffraction limit of the Mayall 3.8 m telescope.
