The CTIO 4 m PFCCD has been used with Strömgren uvby filters to study the turnoff of the globular cluster NGC 6397. A well-defined C-M diagram to V ≡ 18 has been achieved with this relatively new application of uvby photometry. A previously noted correlation between δm1 and δc1 for turnoff stars appears to be confirmed by observations of NGC 6397. Self-consistent solution sets of reddening, metal abundance, and age are possible. An age of 16.6±0.7×109yr is indicated. The generally low m1 values for the main-sequence members of the globular cluster permit an exclusion of field-star nonmembers, exclusions independently verified by anomalous δm1, δc1 values. The C-M diagram for the upper main sequence of NGC 6397 following such exclusion shows evidence for several photometric binary candidates.
