Simultaneous optical and IR observations of the exciting star of the peculiar emission nebula RCW 34 were carried out during 1985, April, at the European Southern Observatory. The star is classified O9.5 I. Teff = 32,000±2000K as derived from the optical and IR flux distributions; furthermore the luminosity L = 5.1×105L_sun; and the radius R = 23.3 R_sun; are derived. A spectroscopic scan of the nebular region around the star has been performed. A large IR excess, already found by an earlier analysis (Williams et al., 1977), is confirmed. This strongly suggests the presence of dust around the star. Moreover the star is found to be variable in the IR and spectrophotometric data at these wavelengths show several emission features. This star seems to be very young, possibly a pre-main-sequence O star. It may be described as an O-type object similar to the Herbig Be/Ae stars.
