Through its framework programmes FP5 (2000-2004) and FP6 (2004-2008) the European commission has funded OPTICON to bring together almost all of the major agencies involved in European astronomy. Over the past seven years they have shared ideas, developed future plans, undertaken joint research activities and provided trans-national access to a suite of telescopes. I will outline how OPTICON has developed, how its present activities may be of interest to the JENAM membership and, most importantly, outline our plans for moving forward into FP7 (2007-2013). This will provide an opportunity for interested groups to decide how they might wish to be involved in what we hope will be a major contract for further integration of the wider European astronomical community over the next few years..
