The CDS is a major actor in the development of the Virtual Observatory (VO), which it anticipated by many aspects. SIMBAD, which provides reference data on astronomical objects, and VizieR, the reference database for catalogues and published tables, are important VO building blocks. Aladin is a powerful VO portal, allowing users to access all the data available in VO-enabled services, and to visualize it, in interface with other VO tools for spectra and catalogues. Examples of scientific usage of the VO, taking advantage of the CDS services in connection with other VO tools, will be shown.
