Studies that are to be performed on Mars sample-return ancient igneous rocks will furnish unique information on Martian volatile history. Impact processes will supply samples of materials that might otherwise be unavailable at the surface due to burial or deep emplacement; shocked rocks also preserve direct samples of past Martian atmospheres, fusing atmospheric constituents into the samples.
