An approximation scheme was developed to construct a model of a fully inhomogeneous universe based on the post-Newtonian approximation within the framework of general relativity. Through the use of a spatial averaging procedure, the scheme makes it possible to calculate the back reaction due to the growth of local inhomogeneities on the cosmic expansion (and vice versa). In effect, it can be used to study the formation of the large-scale structure in the early universe down to the fully nonlinear stage.
