The known scatter in accretion rates for a given orbital period in close binaries must reflect long-term fluctuations about a secular mean rate. It is shown that if these fluctuations have a characteristic time-scale of 100,000 yr or more, magnetic cataclysmic variables in the period range 3 to 4 hrs can switch between the nonsynchronous (intermediate polar) and synchronous (AM Her) classes. The effect of such fluctuations in low-mass X-ray binaries is investigated.
