A method for constructing models of the Galaxy is proposed that avoids an arbitrary choice for the mass of the spheroidal component within the radius covered by the disk. The method relies on numerical experiments with disks combined with a bulge, and on a criterion for the stability of a disk of stars against arbitrary nonaxisymmetric disturbances. Tested in this manner, the models of Schmidt and of Rohlfs and Kreitschmann prove unsatisfactory. The galactic-bulge mass within solar radius is estimated from the circular velocity of the disk in the solar neighborhood and the observed stellar radial-velocity dispersion.
