The brightness distribution of zodiacal light along the line of sight is investigated analytically, and an integration approach which does not presuppose the homogeneity of the zodiacal cloud is developed and applied to published earth-based observations. The integrand contains a directional-scattering coefficient (in reciprocal AU), and the steadiness of the cloud over a few weeks time is assumed. The method is applied to the photopolarimeter observations (at 60-120-deg elongation) of Weinberg (1964), Gillett (1967) and Dumont and Sanchez (1975) and extended to the Doppler-spectrometer observations of Reay and Ring (1968), Hicks et al. (1974) and Fried (1978). The results are presented in tables. The homogeneous-cloud hypothesis is seen as contradicted by the finding that local polarization at right scattering angle increases with r but decreases with increasing y.
