A test for the existence of prolate elliptical galaxies based on the properties of the photometric parameters introduced in the Cordoba surface photometry is presented. Definitions and properties of the photometric parameters used at Cordoba for describing a galaxy's luminosity distribution are covered, and a model that relates the parameters to the inclination and intrinsic flattening of elliptical galaxies is developed. A generalization of the model to disk galaxies, and a comparison of results are presented. The surface photometric test for the shape of ellipticals is also examined.
