A low-resolution ultraviolet (1150 - 1800 Å) spectrum of the Io torus has been obtained with IUE. Brightness values for emission features due to S+, S++, S+++, and an upper limit for O++ have been determined simultaneously. The splitting in the emission feature near 1729 Å was clearly apparent. The most likely assignment for these lines at 1713.8 Å and 1729.2 Å is the 5S2 → 3P2,1 intercombination doublet which has not been identified in any laboratory or natural source until this time.
