Magnetic overstability is proposed as an excitation mechanism for the rapid oscillations of magnetic Ap stars. It is shown by a local analysis that, in a superadiabatic shell in the magnetic polar regions of such a star, monotonic convective motions are inhibited and the resultant oscillatory motions grow with time due to the heat exchange between a displaced mass element and its surroundings. The global oscillations induced from such an overstability are then expected to be very high overtones of axisymmetric modes with respect to the magnetic axis and to be responsible for the observed rapid oscillations.
