The current investigation represents the first in a series of studies regarding the stellar kinematics and dynamics of barred galaxies. The studies are concerned with the observations of absorption-line velocity fields, taking into account measurements of rotation velocities and velocity dispersions along a number of spectrograph slit positions for each galaxy. The objective of the considered procedure is the study of the dynamics of bars, and of associated components such as bulges, lenses, disks, and dark halos. The present investigation is concerned with the bar of the prototypical SB0(+) galaxy NGC 936. Attention is given to the basic parameters of NGC 936, observations and reduction procedures, kinematic data, the rotational velocity in the outer disk, the off-center rotation curve along the bar, differences between major-axis and bar rotation curves, n-body models, and the dynamics of the bar.
