While it is generally accepted that a superdense hot universe in which phase transitions occur is indispensable for the achievement of the grand unification of physics, the problem may be considered from the standpoint of the constraits imposed on the ensemble of possible universes by the phase transition mechanism required by grand unification theories. This problem is presently considered in light of the radiation-filled Friedmann subclass of world models, represented in the form of a dynamical system. Standard dynamical systems methods allow the classification of all cosmological models within the subclass considered into those in which phase transitions can take place, and those in which they can never occur.
