The authors present optical spectra of the type I supernova in NGC 5236.
These spectra were taken during the period 3 - 13 July 1983, well before
maximum light, and are the earliest spectra yet obtained of a supernova
of this kind. The main spectral features are broad, blueshifted
absorption lines which move systematically redwards with time.
