The fourth edition of the Yale Bright Star Catalogue (Hoffleit and Jaschek, 1982) was used to derive statistical properties of binary stars. A systematic study was done to evaluate the importance of selection effects in the detection of visual binaries. Then statistics were obtained for main-sequence binaries as a whole. The distributions of these stars according to Delta-m and their separations were determined, and it was verified that the distribution of Delta-m probably depends on the range of semimajor axes of the sample. Possible variations of these distributions according to spectral type were examined but did not appear significant. The frequency of spectroscopic binaries (SB) among components of visual binaries was compared to those of SB's in nonvisual systems, and appeared to be similar. About 60 percent of all stars occur in binary and multiple systems wider than 3 AU.
