The introduction of the new fundamental catalogue FK 5 and the IAU (1976) system of astronomical constants are scheduled for 1 January 1984. In this paper the procedure for the conversion of the FK 4-based positions of stars referred to the epoch and equinox of B 1950.0 to the positions in the FK 5 system (referred to those of J 2000.0) which is in accordance with the new IAU resolutions is developed.
