A semiquantitative model for the propagation of compression waves generated during a supersonic impact in a continuously stratified medium with single discontinuities representing the planetary crust is calculated. Seismic ray paths for the lunar crust are calculated. It is shown that an increase in the compression wave propagation velocity with depth causes the seismic energy to concentrate in a near-surface zone centered on the impact site.
