High-resolution spectra of the central region of NGC 4388 were obtained with the ESO Cassegrain echelle spectrograph (CASPEC) mounted on ESO 3.6 m telescope. The spectral resolution, the slit length projected on the sky, and the seeing size were 0.5 A, 12 arcsec, and 2.5 arcsec, respectively. The emission-line profiles of forbidden O III 5007 A, H-beta, etc., along three slit position angles were analyzed by decomposition into a few Gaussian components. The spatial distributions of the flux and the velocity of these components, and their forbidden S II line-intensity ratios, show that the narrowline region of NGC 4388 consists of two main components. The narrow, blueshifted component corresponds to a spatially extended region where low-density clouds are found, while the broad component corresponds to a rather small region confined to the center, where denser clouds are found. A correlation between the peak velocity of emission lines and their ionization potential is found. This suggests that the velocity field of the low-density component is an accelerating outflow or a decelerating inflow.
