The recently launched Chandra X-ray observatory now has demonstrated its ability to detect, over large areas of the sky, X-ray sources 10-20 times fainter and with 10 times higher angular resolution than could be achieved by any earlier X-ray satellite. We propose here to obtain complementary deep optical images of selected Chandra fields to assure that a large, statistically complete sample of serendipitous X-ray sources can be selected on uniform optical/X-ray color criteria. It is widely recognized that this step was not carried out adequately in previous X-ray missions. Our Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) survey will be made publicly available, thus enabling a wide range of follow-up projects. Since Chandra's ~arcsecond astrometry enables unambiguous identification of optical counterparts, the ChaMP promises rapid advances in our understanding of the nature and evolution of quasars and clusters, and the cosmic X-ray background. We propose to obtain 3-filter optical imaging concurrently with the first receipt of X- ray images from Chandra's Cycle 1, since we expect the ChaMP's results to reorient science drivers and subsequently targets for Chandra and for upcoming X-ray missions like XMM and Astro-E.
