We propose to use the NOAO 4-m's and 1.5-m to obtain final reference spectra and images for nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). These SNe were discovered in Mar. 1999 in a massive campaign coordinated by the Supernova Cosmology Project at LBNL, and which included astronomers from CTIO. Extensive UBVRI photometric and spectroscopic follow-up for the 20 best SNe Ia was obtained at CTIO and elsewhere, making this an extremely valuable dataset for the study of SNe Ia, and their application as cosmological distance indicators. To fully exploit this high-quality spectra and photometry, the host-galaxy image and spectrum must be accurately subtracted. Many of these SNe Ia are embedded in galaxies with complex morphology or steep light profiles, limiting the accuracy of standard interpolation methods for host-galaxy subtraction. For our work at high-z, we obtain images or spectra after the SNe Ia have faded, convolve them to the same resolution as data taken when the SN Ia was active, and subtract. We wish to apply this same technique to nearby SNe Ia to obtain the highest quality result and most consistent comparison with high-z SNe Ia.
