We propose to obtain high velocity resolution and high spatial resolution optical rotation curves from H(alpha) emission lines for a sample of well studied low surface brightness disk galaxies. These galaxies have disks with blue central surface brightnesses ranging from 22.8 to 24.7. Optical surface photometry and 21 cm rotation curves already exist. These data show that low surface brightness galaxies are very dark matter dominated, making them excellent laboratories for measuring the mass distribution of dark matter halos and for testing galaxy formation models. However, results to date are controversial because they are limited by the low spatial resolution of the 21 cm data. We propose to resolve the controversy by obtaining high spatial resolution optical velocities. The resultant combined data set would be a powerful tool for mapping the mass distribution of dark matter halos, a quantity of fundamental interest. In the context of the popular cold dark matter (CDM) model, it also has the potential to help constrain cosmological parameters, as the mass distributions of CDM halos retain information about the cosmology in which they form. Experience shows that smaller telescopes are inadequate for this project, but that the RCSP on the 4 m is perfect for it.
