H-alpha and forbidden N II imaging and spectroscopic observations of PKS 0521-36 and its surrounding nebular emission line region are presented. A low surface brightness asymmetric emission region is observed on the opposite side of the optical jet, extending up to 21 kpc from the nucleus. The emission region has a sharp arc-like external edge, which may be the remnant of a bow shock where subsequent cooling of the hot gas provided density and temperature of the gas appropriate for photoionization by the active nucleus.
