Two observational tests allow confirmation of the r-process origin of the traditional s-process elements in metal-poor stars. The first test is the comparison of the pattern of heavy element abundances in metal-poor stars with the patterns of s- and r-process elements observed in the Sun. A second observational test is the direct determination of the isotopic mix of Ba from the profile of the Ba II (lambda)4554 resonance line, establishing whether the Ba is produced by the r-process or the s-process. We propose to obtain a very high resolution and signal-to-noise ratio spectrum of the very metal-poor giant HD 122563 with camera 6 on the coude feed telescope to determine its Ba isotope distribution. If s-process elements are present, then either stars of very low metallicity continued to form well after the initial rise of the iron abundance in the Galaxy or an additional site of s-process nucleosynthesis which can occur on short evolutionary timescales will be needed to account for these elements.
