Scientific paper

The paper discusses some of the ionospheric motions which can exert significant effects, direct or indirect, on ionospheric processes. Results of calculations of thermospheric winds driven by horizontal pressure gradients that build up in the thermosphere as a result of nonuniform atmospheric heating are discussed. Some calculated and observed effects of the thermospheric winds on ionospheric processes such as the diurnal variation of the F2-region peak electron density and height and ionization transport and on particle concentrations are examined. Attention is also given to the effects of acoustic-gravity waves, atmospheric tides, and planetary waves. The possible acoustic-gravity-wave origin of observed medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID's) is discussed.
