The letter examines the explanation that a variable gravitational constant (G) affords for the 'missing mass' paradox. Analyses of the orbits of two point masses and the simulated orbits of two galaxies show that the variability of G explains in principle both the observed small range in the absolute magnitudes of the brightest ellipticals in clusters of galaxies and the independence of that range from the size and richness of a cluster. It is concluded that the breakup of early clusters of galaxies into small groups and isolated galaxies is to be expected with a steadily weakening gravitational field.
