The paper considers transient processes undergone by a ballistically descending spacecraft in the case of autonomous control of pitch, yaw and roll and a linear control law with respect to deviation and its derivative. The differential equations of the transient process are transformed to an inhomogeneous Whittaker equation. Cases are examined which are suitable for analytic treatment and their accuracy is assessed. This allows one to reduce the selection of the parameters of the stabilizing automaton to a system of inequalities, corresponding to stability requirements and quality criteria of the transient process.
