Changes in the slope of the muon spectrum may be interpreted in terms of scaling breakdown at primary-nucleon energies on the order of 30 TeV, or an increase in slope of the nucleon spectrum of primary cosmic rays. In the balloon experiments described an attempt was made to verify these assumptions by measuring simultaneously the nucleon and pion spectra in the stratosphere, using the same technique. Stacks consisting of 16 layers, each composed of three roentgenographic films, or two such films and a 50-micron nuclear emulsion layer, separated by 0.5 cm lead were exposed for 200 hr at heights between 18 and 30 km. About 520 electron-photon cascades with zenith angles greater than 60 degrees and energies above 2 TeV, caused by the electron-photon component and by nucleon interactions (Pb events), were recorded. Two techniques were used to differentiate between these events.
