Photometry of the setting sun in the region 610 nm was used to measure 140 eclipses of the Soviet satellite IK-3 during October-December 1970. Neuzil and Zacharov (1976) introduced a parameter DI which they defined as the difference in the geocentric angle of the satellite between the point of the light curve where the solar ray passes by the minimal altitude, 50 km, and the point where 80 percent of the solar flux is outside the eclipse. As a consequence, the weaker DI is, the stronger the absorption in the stratosphere and vice versa. A curve plotting DI vs latitude shows two regions of weak DI accumulation (or strong solar absorption): a region of ozone absorption and a region of aerosol absorption associated with the Orionid and Geminid meteoroid showers.
