In a strong magnetic field the cross sections of elementary interactions between radiation and matter depend on the angle between the direction of the field and that of electromagnetic wave propagation. The radiative transfer equation is solved for the case of a strong magnetic field, considering in detail a plane infinite atmosphere with a constant radiant flux and with an exponential distribution of primary sources. The angular distribution of emergent radiation and the radiant flux density distribution are described by the H function of Chandrasekhar. The model developed here can be applied to the transfer of X-rays in a binary system containing a neutron star with a strong magnetic field.
