ABSTRACT The Cassini Mission's "Scientist for a Day" program provides school students in the United States with the opportunity to experience life as a planetary scientist. Twice a year, usually in May and November, an hour or so of observing time on the Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn is allocated to the "Scientist for a Day" competition. Students are given the choice of a number of possible imaging targets in the saturnian system, they research these targets, decide which one will bring the best scientific results and write a five hundred word essay explaining the reasons for their selection. The essay with the best scientific argument for a chosen target wins the contest. Winners and as many other students as possible have the opportunity to participate in a teleconference with Cassini scientists and engineers where they can ask questions about the specific targets of the competition images or the Cassini Project in general. The "Scientist for a Day" competition has been extended to the United Kingdom with the collaboration of UK-based planetary scientists at Queen Mary, University of London. The winners of the separate UK competition and as many other participants as possible are invited to London where they participate in a videoconference with JPL where they can discuss the results and ask general questions. The Cassini Outreach Office at JPL makes available all the materials produced for the US competition and arranges for US based Cassini scientists and engineers for the videoconference. With the participation of local organisers it would be possible to organise the competition in other countries for the November 2008 event and events in 2009.
