Abstract The chemical and isotopic composition at the surface of Titan will provide much information about its formation, evolution, and chemistry. Additionally the lake environments provide a unique arena to search for the formation of pre-biotic compounds and amino acids and to examine unique organic chemistries that cannot be replicated in the laboratory. A high performance landed mass spectrometer will present a direct interface with which to investigate the surface environment. The enhanced mobility of a submersible mounted mass spectrometer extends the region of investigation allowing sampling both at and below the surface. The mass spectrometer for this mission must be able to handle inputs from diverse ion and neutral sources and be linked with advanced analytical techniques, such as 2-D gas chromatography, laser ablation, pyrolysis, and liquid chromatography. Such an instrument must have wide mass resolution, high precision and high dynamic range to perform analysis of complex organic materials, stable isotopes and primordial gasses.
