Abstract Isotopes provide strong constraints on the earliest stages of the solar nebula, on the chronology, on the physico-chemical processes and on the astrophysical environment of the nascent sun. By combining data sets based on different elements, a whole picture can be obtained, even if small inconsistencies remain unexplained. The timescales inferred from isotopes can then be discussed in the framework of physical models. The homogeneity - or relative heterogeneity - of isotopes deduced from meteorite data must be compared with results of nucleosynthesis calculations and feeding models for the solar nebula.
