Recent research has revealed that collisionless shocks appear in a range of astronomical settings, including the solar wind upstream of all the planets and comets that have been visited by spacecraft. Solar flares and galactic outburts are also responsible for large disturbances and it is widely believed that shocks from supernova explosions accelerate cosmic rays. The formation of collisionless shocks is detailed, and the role of Alfven waves in cometary shocks is discussed.
