Ellipticities for a large number of clusters, including 397 Abell clusters have been measured. The distribution of projected axial ratios is approximately Gaussian with a mean of about 0.6 and a standard deviation of about 0.2. This observed distribution could come from a population of prolate spheroids with a Gaussian distribution of axial ratios with mean of about 0.5 and standard deviation of about 0.15. It is shown that, in the general case where objects are triaxial or there is a mixture of prolate and oblate configurations, the inversion from projected to intrinsic shapes is not necessarily unique.
