This paper focuses on a specific instrumental effect that, in the end, can interfere with pulsation-mode identification using photometric observables. In any photometric measurement, the sources of systematic error are hidden and subtle. The optical imperfections of the telescope, in particular, have a direct impact on the framework from which pulsational parameters are derived. We underline that mode typing by photometry alone, i.e. without additional support by spectroscopic techniques, is not a robust method, and its fragility is illustrated by the substantial uncertainties on the observables and by the lack of confirmation when photometric and spectroscopic mode typing are compared.
