Spectroscopic modes of theta Tuc are compared to frequencies obtained in photometry. Test investigations are carried out for the effect of sparse sampling similar to spectroscopy, for the effects of observing site and allocation of observing time. Four-hour time series on each of seven consecutive nights is not long enough for the resolution of regularly spaced (1-2 /d) modes in theta Tuc. Frequencies at 18.82/d and 20.78/d found in spectroscopy could have resulted from the combination of data set not long enough and the complexity of the excited modes in theta Tuc. Mode identification in such a case is misleading. Attention is drawn to the critical point of where to stop in any kind of period search.
