We discuss the problem of correcting for transparency variations in the photometric monitoring of a star. Spurious periods are introduced if there is a systematic error in the extinction coefficient. We discuss this effect and the dependence of the photometric errors on the distance to the comparison star and its colour. The problem of defining a continuum for echelle spectra and the determination of line profile variations in spectra with crowded lines are also discussed.
