A method for determining the period of a variable signal using the moments of characteristic points on the phase curve is studied. This method makes it possible to search for local extrema instead of evaluating the continuous periodogram. In effect, computation time is reduced. The present algorithm is tested on the eclipsing cataclysmic variable PG 0818 + 513 and the model random distribution of moments of time.
